This was Loreen’s Niewenhuis’s second signing at Black River Books. We still have signed copies of A 1000-Mile Walk on the Beach, her interesting and well-written account of her “Trek of the Perimeter of Lake Michigan.” Loreen’s next adventure will be to hike the shores of all 5 of the Great Lakes. Follow Loreen on her laketrekblogspot. Stay tuned for the next book. |

Black River Books hosted a signing for this wonderful new book, “Vintage Views along the West Michigan Pike,” by Chris Byron, local historian, librarian and author, and Thomas Wilson, historian and co-author. The book depicts the adventure and romance of motoring on Michigan’s most prominent early highway. Vintage post cards, photographs, maps and ephemera illustrate this journey as you time-travel through the beautiful West Michigan landscape and quaint towns, to hotels and cabins, tourist camps and state parks, and other stops along the road. Vintage posters taken from the book’s illustrations are also available. |

We have sold over 150 copies of Once Upon a Small Town. This wonderful book tells true stories about Jimmy Shannon, a mentally challenged person, who has become an icon in the town in which John Mooy and Jimmy were raised. It tells how Jimmy impacted the community, and the community impacted him. The book is a wonderful read for young person and adult alike. |

WOW Women’s Only Weekend was held Nov. 11-13 Black River Books Welcomed Back Two Female Authors, Loreen Niewenhuis, author of A 1000-Mile Walk on the Beach, and Jane Knuth, author of Thrift Store Saints. We had a great turn-out even with everything going on. All who visited and met the authors had a great time. So did the authors! We expect this will be an annual event.
This was also Jane Knuth’s second visit to our store. In Thrift Store Saints, Jane tells of how she was spiritually challenged and changed by her volunteer work at St. Vincent de Paul Thrift Store in Kalamazoo. The poor became her theologians. The book has had a great response. Watch our site for a signing this spring for the sequel, Jane’s next book, Thrift Store Graces.

2011 Highlights Below |
Last spring, Black River Books purchased over 2000 books from a private collector. There were many WWll books, books about the Kennedy family, many signed books, and a substantial number of Berrien County books. This acquisition necessitated our having more shelves built giving Black River Books a new look. This alcove is part of our added shelves. The Military & War alcove required another building project. |
South Haven’s own Wendy Anderson Halperin & John Mooy were at Black River Books late summer for their annual book signing. We always carry signed copies of their wonderful children’s books. |
The Yellow-Lighted Bookshop, by Lewis Buzbee, continues to be one of Pam’s picks for a new book. It is a bibliophile’s memoir and is a delightful read for anyone who loves books and spending time in book stores. |
We’ve added a few books to our New Michigan books section: “Michigan Civil War,” Michigan Ghost Stories,” and a couple of new Michigan Chillers for the kids. We have enlarged our sections of Used Michigan books and Chicago books and have added a Midwest Section and a Great Lakes section. |

Although we are primarily a used bookstore, as you can see from our Genre Selections, we carry some new books with a local connection, either by author or topic. |
We are always buying books. Whenever possible, we buy unusual collections. We recently purchased a number of books about Russia. These included books in the Russian language. Another collection we purchased had many books on Jungian psychology, and another collection included many books on Catholicism and on Christian marriage. |

Just out, new book by David M. Zeff. The Adventures of Peanuts, Popcorn, Chestnuts, and Tootles. David and his wife own Carriage House and are South Haven’s own. This book shares the stories that David created as he told them to his grandchildren. David’s kids encouraged him to record the stories in a children’s book, and he did. Here it is! Way to go, David! Come in and check out this great children’s book. |
